Slide 33

PROPERTIES OF FRAGILE • Dislikes variability and stress • Seek to eliminate variability, noise, and tension • Consistency/Standardisation driven • Overly optimised • Prediction based • Typically large

Slide 34

PROPERTIES OF ANTIFRAGILE • builds layers of redundancy to localise impact • dislike consistency/standardisation • less is more / keep it small and simple (KISS) - large is vulnerable • encourage optionality by deferring decisions to the last responsible moment (hence is more opportunistic) • dislike prediction (system based on prediction are fragile) • safe-fail, fail-frequently

Slide 39

PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL

Slide 40

W H AT A B O U T ? • Its much easier to sell “Look what I did for you" than “Look what I avoided for you." • Of course a bonus system based on "performance" exacerbates the problem.

Slide 41

N E G AT I V A • The first step towards antifragility is to decrease downside • Instead of focusing your time on adding things to your life/process to make it better, focus first on subtracting habits, practices, things, people that fragile you. • Throw out practices (Less is More)
